What do we KNOW about grants and acquiring them?

  1. They are highly competitive and you have to shape your application to show how well you fit the goals and priorities if the granting institution.

  4. I have applied and been accepted by one grant with Kentucky Foundation for Women. I learned they are time consuming to apply for and require acquiring a significant amount of documentation and both before and after the granting process. The ones I know of come from non-profits and arts councils. They can fund creative projects.

  5. You can use grants for personal projects ex. buying a car, Real Estate taxes, tuition, etc.

  6. You have a better chance getting most grants if you can demonstrate community impact or influence through your work.

  7. I know a grant can be a financial form that enables one to get money, ie. school aid.

  13. You have to secure smaller grants before you can secure larger/more grants. You can (should?) apply for grants to fund the final dissertation years of your graduate program. Having a record of securing grants can make you more competitive on the academic job market.

  14. I know that some grants are based off of your expected family contribution, and how much income you make.
